Course: JNY200 – Joinery I

As anyone who has ever built a piece of furniture knows, the weakest link is the joinery. Although we teach joinery in the Fundamentals courses these courses are too brief and broad based to go into an in depth study of the many joints that are used. The student really needs a more concentrated and focused exposure to making the various joints. Repetition is a key to building and retaining the skill. There are many considerations to making joints; the most important is to choose the right joint for the right application. Accurate layout is critical to accurately cutting the joinery.  In addition it is good to know which glues to use and just as important is sharp tools to cut the joint. We will concentrate on the mortise and tenon (various), through dovetails, half blind dovetails, bridal joints, lapped dovetails, and the half lap.

In this course you will learn:

  • The layout process
  • Gluing
  • Hand cutting joinery
  • Machine cut joints
  • Sharpening
